Seniors Lead Way as Buccaneers Begin Individual Workouts

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern women’s basketball team began their preparations for the 2012-2013 season on Monday morning as the team began individual workouts in the Buccaneer Fieldhouse.

Seniors Rachelle Coward and Shay Jones were a part of the first group to get on the floor in the Fred Applin era at CSU and participated in an hour-long workout focused on shooting, footwork and moving around the basket with and without the ball.

"I think it was exciting to start individuals this morning, the group came in and worked very hard, giving 100 percent and our upperclassmen really set the tone as our freshmen get ready to start their workouts tomorrow," commented Applin on the morning session. "A lot of players are excited about the first day and as a coaching staff, we’re glad to finally get our hands on the team and start working with them."

The freshmen and the remainder of the team will begin their individual workouts as the week progresses, with the team focusing on footwork, shooting and conditioning. Next week’s workouts will continue with the emphasis beginning on defense and conditioning to get the players ready for when team practice officially begins.

"It’s a long year and this is the first day of our journey," said Applin about the coming basketball season. "I want the team to come in with the right frame of mind and focus on getting things done the right way. We’re going to go hard every possession and realize that we will make mistakes along the way, but we’ll correct those through practice and video. We want to make sure everyone is on the same page and going 100 percent every day."
