CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern took game one of a Big South Conference doubleheader with UNC Asheville, 18-15, with game two suspended due to darkness in the bottom of the seventh inning with CSU leading, 12-7. Game three of the series will be completed on Sunday, beginning at 1 p.m.
Game one lasted four hours as the teams combined for 34 hits. UNCA opened up a 7-3 lead after three and a half innings but the Buccaneers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at seven.
CSU added four runs in the sixth, four more in the seventh and three in the eighth for an 18-7 lead heading into the ninth. Asheville mounted an eight-run rally, aided by two CSU errors, but fell three runs short of a miracle comeback.
CSU first baseman Graham Maiden had two homeruns and four hits in the first game while catcher Keith Stewart had three hits and five RBI. Rightfielder Brian Sole had four RBI, including his fifth homer of the season in the eighth, and centerfielder Jordan Haar had three RBI.
Designated hitter Nathan Durham had three hits for the Bulldogs, as did second baseman Evan Dawson. Asheville finished with 16 hits while the Buccaneers tallied a season-high 18 hits.
Josh Evans (2-1) earned the victory in relief, allowing one run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings. Eric Brotzman (0-1) took the loss in relief for UNCA, allowing six earned runs in 2 1/3 innings.Related Item: Box Score
