CHARLESTON, S.C. – It took longer than expected but the Charleston Southern baseball team finally closed out a series sweep of UNC Asheville with a 14-10 victory on Sunday afternoon.
Game three of the series began on Saturday but was suspended due to darkness on Saturday evening with the Buccaneers leading, 12-7, in the bottom of the seventh inning. The teams returned to the field on Sunday with the Buccaneers closing out the win.
Charleston Southern improves to 3-3 in Big South play and 11-9 overall while the Bulldogs drop to 4-9 overall, 0-3 in league play.
CSU scored six runs in the first three innings to take the early lead in game three but the Bulldogs rallied to grab a 7-6 lead after six innings. The Buccaneers pulled ahead with a big seventh inning, scoring eight to take a 14-7 lead into the eighth.
Asheville shortstop Josh Coyle answered in the eighth with his second homerun of the day, a three-run blast, cutting the lead to 14-10. Coyle finished the game with five hits and six RBI.
CSU closer Nino Fasulo ended any hopes of a comeback, recording the final five outs to record his fourth save of the season. Ryan Sowers earned the victory for CSU, improving to 3-0 on the season.
First baseman Graham Maiden tallied four RBI in game three, giving him 10 RBI for the series. Designated hitter Jeff Kolhagen added three hits and three RBI and outfielders Justin Fyle and Jordan Haar contributed two RBI each.
CSU ripped off 49 hits in the three-game sweep. Freshman catcher Keith Stewart was nine-for-10 with six RBI during the series.
