Bucs hammer out 22 hits in 17-1 win over Birmingham Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern hammered out a season-high 22 hits and took game one of the Big South Conference series with Birmingham Southern, 17-1, on Friday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.

Charleston Southern improved to 16-9 overall and 4-3 in the Big South with their eighth consecutive victory. The Buccaneers also improved to 13-0 at home this season.

Birmingham Southern drops to 14-8 overall, 3-1 in the Big South.

Senior Jordan Haar and sophomore Justin Fyle paced the CSU attack, each picking up four hits on the day. Haar added three RBI and scored four runs and belted a first-inning two-run homerun to put CSU up, 2-0.

Seniors Brad Woods and Brian Sole tallied three hits each, along with freshman Keith Stewart, who hit his first collegiate homerun, a two-run blast, in the second inning.

Junior Josh Evans allowed five hits and one run over seven innings to improve to 4-1 on the season. Birmingham Southern starter David Horne (3-2) took the loss, allowing 10 runs and 12 hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Birmingham Southern's lone run came on a fourth-inning solo homerun by Adam Tucker, his eighth of the season.

CSU built a 5-0 lead after two innings and put the game away with a five-run fourth to take a 10-1 lead. CSU scored in every inning except the third.

The two teams will meet in a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.
