CHARLESTON, S.C. - Junior left-hander Josh Evans scattered four hits and struck out 11 in a complete game effort as Charleston Southern defeated Radford, 4-0, in the first game of a three-game Big South Conference series on Friday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.
Evans (5-1) walked only one while facing 33 batters in CSU's first solo complete game shutout of the season. The 5-10 native of Charleston, South Carolina struck out the side in the first inning and was never threatened in the game.
Senior third baseman Brad Woods had three hits and sophomore first baseman Graham Maiden had two RBI as Charleston Southern improved to 17-11 overall, 5-5 in the Big South Conference.
First baseman Kellen Wohlford had two of Radford's four singles on the day as the Highlanders reached base just once in the game. Radford drops to 5-18 overall and 0-4 in the Big South.
Radford starter Mark Fleisher (2-4) took the loss despite his best performance of the season. Fleisher allowed three runs on seven hits, striking out six in 5 2/3 innings.
Senior rightfielder Brian Sole put CSU up 1-0 in the first with a two-out RBI double to left. The Buccaneers added single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to stake Evans to a comfortable lead down the stretch.
The two teams resume action with a doubleheader on Saturday with game one beginning at 11 a.m. Related Item: Box Score |
