CHARLESTON, S.C. - With the end of the fall semester coming soon, hard work is winding down in the CSU Athletics weight room. With the end of our training cycles here our testing phase was in full effect and we had many positive results in our Buccaneer Classic testing program. For this installment we will update you Baseball, Softball, and Men’s & Women’s Track and Field programs results in the Buccaneer Classic and other off-season high lights.
The CSU Baseball Team had the best fall in training in recent history and I am very excited to see what will be the result this coming spring. The Super Buc Award winners are Nick Berry (69pts), Dennis Buckley (72pts), Patrick Dolan (70pts), Ryan Gunther (67pts), Levi Mauldin (66pts), Ben Qualkinbush (64pts), George Schaefer (73pts), Jaren Sustar (67pts), Alex Tomasovich (63pts), Kyle Ward (62pts), Harrison Wilkins (71pts), and Drew Woodall (72pts). Elite Buc Award winners are Kevin Buran (81pts), Blake Hunt (82pts), Charlie McCready (76pts), Austin Weekley (77pts), and Brian Welch (78pts). Some of the best improvements in the Buccaneer Classic were Chandler Cox (33pts), Drew Woodall (23pts), Ben Qualkinbush and Blake Hunt both (20pts). Some of the top performances were Blake Hunt 500lbs back squat and Brian Welch 305lbs bench press & 280lbs hang clean. Harrison Wilkins had the team’s best broad jump with a jump of 9ft ‘6”, while Kyle Ward led the team in pull-ups with 27.
The CSU Softball Team also had a tremendous fall this past off-season. In our Buccaneer Classic testing we had our first ever female Champion Buc from the Softball program, Jana Matthews scored 86pts in the Buccaneer Classic earning her the Champion Buc Award. Jasmine Conley earned Elite Buc by scoring 76 points and Lizzy Olmstead earned Super Buc by scoring 65 points. Some other top performances in the Buccaneer Classic were Hayes Holdsworth improved by 12 points and Stephanie Sbardella who improved 10 points. Jana Matthews lead the way in top testing performance with a team leading back squat (250lbs), hang clean (150lbs), Vertical Jump (23.5”), and Broad Jump (7’0”).
The CSU Men’s Track & Field Team had without a doubt the best fall they have ever had in recent history. Earning Champion Buc were Lavon Allen (87pts), Rozzie Johnson (91pts), Zach Pociatek (86pts), and Javon Young (87pts). This is the high number of Champion Bucs ever from one team in school history. Avery Coe (65pts) and Conrad Wilbourn (70pts) both also earned Super Buc in the Buccaneer Classic. Top improvements in the Buccaneer Classic were Avery Coe +32pts, Rozzie Johnson +16pts, Lavon Allen +13pts, and Zach Pociatek +12pts. Some top performances Sprinters & Jumpers – Back Squat 475lbs, Bench Press 295lbs, and Power Clean 305lbs Rozzie Johnson / Throwers – Back Squat 535lbs, Bench Press 340lbs, and Hang Clean 315lbs Zach Pociatek. Top Broad Jump was done by Dantwan Spread with a jump of 10ft ‘2”.
The CSU Women’s Track & Field Team performed very well this fall in their off-season training. Patria Norman earned Elite Buc in the Buccaneer Classic scoring 79 points, which was up 12 points from last year. Other improvements were Daisy Whitaker +19 points, Mary Beth Elliot +18 points, Sequoya Casey +15 points, Patria Norman +12 points, Tamisha Foster +11 points, and Lavernia Cameron +10 points. Patria Norman lead the way for the sprinters & jumpers in the Bench Press-140lbs, Back Squat-315lbs, and Power Clean-175lbs. Tamisha Foster lead the way in the broad jump with a jump of 8ft ‘3”. Leading the way for the throwers were Talei Tagivakatini in the bench press 180lbs, Daisy Whitaker in the back squat 350lbs, and Joshlyn Noga in the hang clean 175lbs.
