BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – A four-run first inning outburst proved too much for Charleston Southern to overcome, as the Bucs fell to Gardner-Webb, 5-3, in the finale of a doubleheader at Varsity Field on Saturday afternoon.
CSU (27-21, 10-7) scored a run each in the sixth and seventh to pull within two runs, and had the bases loaded with one out following Hayes Holdsworth’s RBI walk. Cindy Boomhower regrouped and nailed down the save for Gardner-Webb (22-23, 8-7), however, by striking out Melissa Adams and then retiring Melanie Stickney on a groundout.
Jen Giles (9-9) was tagged with the loss for the Bucs after allowing five runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks over 4.0 innings, while fanning three. Jessica Childers (6-10) earned the victory for the Runnin’ Bulldogs with 4.0 excellent frames of relief, permitting just one run on four hits and three walks, while striking out one.
Megan Lombard paced the Bucs offensively with a 2-for-4 day, while Kristin Kelleher, Holdsworth, and Adams all drove in runs.
CSU and Gardner-Webb will conclude this three-game series Sunday at 2 p.m. After tomorrow’s contest, the Bucs will enjoy a two-game respite from game action to prepare and take final exams.
