CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern’s Toni Lashley and Stephanie Hand were recognized on Sunday morning as 2012 Big South Preseason All-Conference Second Team selections, as chosen by the College Sports Madness staff.
Lashley was selected to the Second Team as a forward, while Hand earned Second Team honors as a defender in the poll released a week before the Buccaneers open the 2012 regular season at home against local rivals The Citadel. Kickoff at the CSU Soccer Field for the Friday, August 17th match is set for 4 p.m.
Lashley, a rising junior forward from Union County, N.C., led the Buccaneers last season with eight goals, four of which turned out to be game-winners in earning 2011 Big South All-Conference honors. The Marvin Ridge High School graduate played in 17 matches for Coach Eric Terrill as a sophomore, recording 14 starts on the front line. She finished second on the team with 44 shots and added 21 shots on goal for the year. Her game winners included goals against USC Upstate, Francis Marion, Longwood and Presbyterian as she finished in the top 10 in the Big South in both goals scored and game-winning goals.
Hand, a rising sophomore defender from Keinlworth, N.J. returns after a standout freshman campaign which saw the 5-3 athlete earn All-Big South Freshman team honors, as well as being selected to the 2011 Big South All-Tournament Team. She also earned CSU Women’s Soccer Defensive Most Valuable Player honors at the annual CSU Athletic Banquet. She was one of only six Buccaneers players to start all 19 games last season and provided a solid presence on the field as one of the team’s more aggressive defenders.
