KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Freshman Nicolas Baena and junior Ross Thomson are tied for 49th and have the Bucs in 17th through two rounds at the 2012 Wendy’s Kiawah Classic, played Monday at Turtle Point Golf Club.
The Bucs are through two rounds with a total of 612 after a 312 (+24) on Monday. CSU is one stroke back of Utah Valley and two strokes behind Connecticut in a logjam in the middle of a 26-team field. Only 10 strokes separate the 17th-place Bucs from Big South foe Radford in eighth.
South Carolina leads the event at 575. The Gamecocks’ Matthew NeSmith and Caleb Sturgeon are tied for second overall at 142 (E). USC holds a seven-stroke lead over College of Charleston and is 12 strokes ahead of Wisconsin.
Stetson’s Dustin Dingus is the tournament leader at 2-under after a 69 on Monday, one of only three rounds in the 60s in the tournament. NeSmith and Sturgeon each have a round in the 60s.
Thomson shot an 80 in Monday’s round and struggled on the back nine after back-to-back birdies on the seventh and eighth holes.
Baena fired a 76 (+5) on Monday. He was even through 14 holes.
Sophomore Jarrett Swan had CSU’s wildest round for a 79 (+8) Swan had three birdies, a bogey, and a double bogey in his first eight holes. He is tied for 55th.
CSU’s C.J. Liner is also tied for 55th after a 79 (+8). He had back-to-back birdies to finish his front nine, while Choo Teck Ng is tied for 78th.
Final round tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
