An all-time high of 59.69 percent of eligible Big South Conference student-athletes earned Presidential Honor Roll status for their work in the classroom in 2016-17. To be named to the Presidential Honor Roll, student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or better for the recently-completed academic year, and this past season, 1,780 out of 2,982 eligible student-athletes achieved the benchmark. In addition, the 59.69 percentage marks the third consecutive year above 50 percent.
High Point University led all Big South institutions for the third straight year, as HPU had 77.83 percent of its 230 eligible student-athletes on the Presidential Honor Roll -- one of seven members to have at least 60 percent of 3.0 students. UNC Asheville placed 72.11 percent of its 190 student-athletes on the list, while Gardner-Webb University had 67.13 percent of its 356 student-athletes among the honorees. Also surpassing the 60 percent threshold was Winthrop University (66.42%), Radford University (65.95%), Campbell University (63.74%) and Presbyterian College (63.54%).
In addition, 135 student-athletes achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA in 2016-17, and each of the Big South's 19 sponsored sports had at least three 4.0 students.
"WOW! When I saw the percentage of student-athletes achieving Big South Presidential Honor Roll status I immediately asked our staff to check the numbers," commented Kallander. "How impressive to have nearly 60 percent achieve over a 3.0! We are all so proud of our student-athletes -- they win on the field, they win in the community, and, most importantly, they win in the classroom. The Big South Conference -- WHERE WINNERS ARE MADE!"
