Bucs drop first road contest of the season to Wofford, 55-48

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Wofford broke a second half tie with a 14-4 run as Charleston Southern fell late to the host Terriers inside Benjamin Johnson Arena, 55-48.

With Wofford holding the 44-34 lead with 5:29 to play, CSU went on an 8-0 run to bring the game back to within one possession at 44-42 as Tatum Jarvis and Natasha Lebedeva converted all six of their free throw attempts during the stretch.

Wofford went on their final run to take the 52-44 lead with 51 seconds remaining, but Alyssa Mann cut the lead down to four points with back-to-back layups to pull the game at 52-48.

Jordan Frazier answered with back-to-back free throws and following a CSU turnover and missed three-pointer, Ashton Fleming converted the first of two free throw attempts to close out the Terriers win.

Charleston Southern falls to 2-1 overall with the loss, while Wofford improves to 1-2 overall on the season with the win.

 Jarvis led the Bucs with 14 points despite battling through foul trouble throughout the game. The sophomore forward went 5-of-6 from the free throw line while pulling down five rebounds. Rochelle Brophy added eight points, while Lebedeva had seven points in the loss.

Frazier led three Terriers in double-digits with 12 points, while Maria Corella (11) and Chanel Stokes were also in double-figures. Fleming led Wofford on the glass with seven rebounds and added nine points, while Frazier led the defensive efforts with five steals.

The Bucs held the lead through the first seven minutes of the game as Jarvis converted a layup and Monique Maximilien connected on a layup to put CSU ahead 4-0 at the 14:56 mark. The CSU defense caused six turnovers and forced Wofford to miss their first three shots before the Terriers scored their first basket on a Grayson Pinholster put-back.

The Bucs went up 8-4 on an Alise Karlsone layup, but the Terriers followed by scoring 10 of the last 14 points of the half to hold the 14-12 halftime lead.

Both teams struggled from the court in the first half as CSU shot 26.1 percent from the floor, while Wofford was held to 35.3 percent.  

Marley Brown drilled a three-pointer out of the break to take the 15-14 lead right away as the teams swapped the lead four times over the first four minutes. Wofford took the lead for good at 20-19 with 16:27 remaining on a Stokes layup.

The Bucs tied the contest up three more times in the second half at 24-24 on a pair of Brophy free throws, 26-26 on Brown free throws and 28-28 on a Jarvis layup before the Terriers went on their run to close out the contest.

Charleston Southern remains on the road as the Bucs travel to Gainesville, Fla. and the Stephen C. O'Connell Center on Tuesday night to take on the University of Florida in non-conference play. Tipoff between the Bucs and the Gators is set for 7 p.m.
