CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern took a late lead in the overtime period behind 11 points in the overtime period by Anicia Dotson, but out of their final timeout, Ashante Richard took the inbounds pass and drove in for the winning layup as the Buccaneers fell in heart-breaking fashion to the visiting High Point Panthers on Monday night, 91-90.
In the overtime period, Dotson got the Buccaneers off to the quick start on the opening tipoff, taking the ball from Monique Maximilien and driving the length of the court to put the Buccaneers ahead 83-81 less than three seconds into the extra minute. Teddy Vincent followed with a pair of free throws to tie the game up for the 14th time in the contest as the momentum in the period swung back and forth.
Inside the final minute, High Point took their first lead of the overtime frame as Kaylah Keys connected on a pair of free throw with 31 seconds remaining to put the Panthers ahead 89-88. Dotson followed with a pair of free throws of her own with 22 seconds to play to tie push the Buccaneers back in the lead at 90-89, setting the stage for Richard's final layup.
Dotson and Erin Bratcher led Charleston Southern with 22 points apiece to pace the Buccaneers offense on the night, while DJ Fowler and Tatum Jarvis were also in double-digits with 10 points apiece in the loss. CSU shot 48.4 percent as team from the floor in the game and 47.4 percent from behind the arc with Bratcher connecting on six three-pointers to add to her career totals.
Keys led four High Point players in double-digits with 28 points in the game and added six steals on the night to lead the Panthers to the split against the Bucs. DeAnneisha Jackson added a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Teddy Vincent (11 points) and Lindsay Puckett (10 points) were both among the HPU scoring leaders on the night.
With the score tied at 64-64 with 6:53 to play in the second half, the Panthers went on a 6-0 run as Keys connected on a three-pointer from the top of the key. Jackson followed with a layup to put the Panthers up 70-64 with under six minutes to play.
The Buccaneers answered, tying the game up for the 12th time on the night as Dotson drilled the three-pointer at the 4:54 mark, while Bratcher connected on a triple on the next CSU possession from the left corner to tie the contest at 70-70.
High Point went back up by five points following a Keys three-pointer at the 3:10 mark and the Panthers held the lead throughout the next three minutes before the Buccaneers put together one final run inside the final minute. With HPU leading 81-78 with 19 ticks remaining, the Buccaneers had one final opportunity with the inbounds pass underneath the High Point basket. The inbounds pass went to Bratcher in the right corner, and the senior guard created space before draining the triple to tie the game and send it into overtime.
The Panthers scored the first nine points of the contest and held the lead throughout the first 10 minutes before Charleston Southern tied the game up for the first time at the 9:36 mark on a layup by Maximilien. The basket was part of a 7-0 run by the Buccaneers as Bratcher connected on a triple to give Charleston Southern their first lead of the game at 21-18 with 8:43 to play.
High Point would go into the break with the lead as Keys drove in for the fast-break layup with 1:20 to play in the half to put the Panthers ahead 36-35.
The Buccaneers came out of the second half on fire, scoring 22 of the first 34 points of the half in taking their largest lead of the game at seven points as Fowler drove in for the layup at the 11:46 mark. Charleston Southern would retain the lead over the next four minutes before the Panthers tied the contest up at 60-60 with 8:21 to play in the half, leading to the final six minutes of the half.
High Point held the 52-39 advantage on the boards, while the Buccaneers forced 27 Panthers turnovers in scoring 35 points.
Charleston Southern returns to the road this week as the Buccaneers travel to Conway, S.C. on Thursday evening to take on Coastal Carolina. Tipoff between the Buc and the Chanticleers inside The HTC Center is set for 7 p.m.
