CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern rallied behind a career performance from senior center Monique Maximilien as the Buccaneers topped Longwood on Saturday afternoon in the Buc Dome, 66-58.
Maximilien scored a career-high 20 points and added six rebounds and three blocked shots as the Buccaneers swept the season series from the Lancers for the first time in program history. The Bucs' win moves CSU back to .500 for the season at 11-11, 6-7 in Big South play for the season.
"I told Mo, we will get you the ball, but you have to finish," said Applin on the senior center. "She is a very good player inside and that's something we talked about at halftime. She listened and I am very happy for her to get 20 points."
The Bucs rallied from a 35-27 deficit at the half with a 7-0 run sparked by a three-pointer by Nayla Long and back-to-back layups from Elyse Kiploks. CSU outscored the Lancers 25-11 overall in the third quarter in taking a six point lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
"It was a team effort," Applin commented. "Everyone contributed to the game. Our post players and our guards played well and the team came out and executed. We took it one possession at a time and came out on top."
Alyssa Mann was also in double-digits for the Bucs with 13 points. The senior guard filled the statistics sheet in the ball game with six rebounds, five assists and four steals in a team-high 36 minutes played, while Elyse Kiploks recorded 11 rebounds and three blocked shots in the win.
The Buccaneers are back in action on the road on Tuesday night in the Templeton Center as CSU makes the return trip to Presbyterian College. Tipoff between the Bucs and the Blue Hose on the Big South Network is set for 7 p.m.
"We have to play within the system on Tuesday. Presbyterian is a very good team," said Applin. "We will have to execute, be smart on defense and not make fouls on open court. Again, it's going to have to be a team effort."
CSU jumped ahead 7-0 out of the gates as Maximilen connected on a jumper, while Mann drilled a three-pointer during the stretch. Kyndal Skersick connected on a three-pointer for the Lancers to end the CSU stretch as the teams swapped baskets throughout the rest of the quarter. Longwood went up four points at 19-15 following a Raven Williams' basket as the Lancers took the 19-18 at the end of the quarter.
The Lancers took control of the second quarter early with a 9-0 run out of the gate capped by a Williams' three-pointer and an Autumn Childress layup to go up 28-18 at the 7:12 mark. The Bucs were able to pull it back within six at 30-24 following a Maximilien jumper in the paint, but CSU trailed 35-27 at the half.
CSU scored 10 of the first 12 points of the third quarter to tie the game up as Rachel Burns connected on a three-pointer from the left wing to knot the score up at 37-37 with 8:12 to play in the frame. Ke'Asia Jackson followed with a triple of her own to give the Bucs the lead. CSU took their largest lead of the quarter at the 1:55 mark on the Maximilien turnaround jumper in the paint at 50-41 on their way to holding the lead into the fourth.
Longwood narrowed the margin down to two points at 52-50 following back-to-back layups by Deborah Headen and Eboni Gilliam. Mann ended the Lancers' comeback attempt with a three-pointer from the left corner as the Bucs raced out to a 10 point lead on their way to closing out the Bucs' victory.
Gilliam led Longwood with 18 points and 14 rebounds in the contest, while Skersick added 14 points and three three-pointers in the loss. Headen was also in double-digits with 11 points.
