CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern women's basketball makes its 2019-20 home debut this weekend as the Buccaneers welcome South Carolina State to the Buc Dome on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff between the Bucs and the Bulldogs is set for noon on ESPN+.
CSU Game Notes vs. S.C. State
Both the Bulldogs and the Bucs enter Saturday's game looking for their first win of the year as CSU fell to Florida State (88-36). SCSU suffered a 70-49 set-back against Presbyterian on Tuesday in their season debut.
The Bucs and Bulldogs have a storied rivalry throughout both program's histories. S.C. State leads the all-time series with the 16-6 advantage, including winning four of the last five times the teams have met up. CSU is 5-8 all-time against the Bulldogs with their last win in the Buc Dome coming in 2016 with a 67-62 victory.
It's a new roster for the Buccaneers this season as six of the 10 players that saw the court for CSU against Florida State were all newcomers to the program. Tuesday was also a game of firsts for the Bucs as
Sha'Mya Leigh,
Carmella Walker, Tyra Smith, and
Sharita Godfrey all made their starting debuts at CSU.
Godfrey set career-highs in points (9), minutes (32), and rebounds (4) in the loss against Florida State, while Leigh (8) and Walker (7) were also among CSU's leading scorers.
The Bucs have traditionally played well at home in non-conference competition under the tenure of head coach
Fred Applin. Included in this was a 101-50 win over Converse in last season's home opener, while the Bucs went 9-7 inside the friendly confines of the Field House in the 2018-19 season.
CSU will look to build off the game against the Bulldogs as the Bucs head back into ACC territory on Friday, November 15, as CSU heads up to Chapel Hill, N.C. for a 5 p.m. tipoff against the North Carolina Tar Heels.
