Steede posts double-double in Senior Day loss to Longwood

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern was unable to overcome a relentless Longwood offensive attack on Saturday afternoon as the Buccaneers fell at home to the visiting Lancers on Senior Day in the Buccaneer Field House, 63-52.

The Bucs (4-25, 2-18 Big South) surrendered 38 points in the paint and 22 points off turnovers on Saturday afternoon as CSU was unable to build the needed run necessary to claw their way back into the game in the second matchup between the two teams. The Bucs limited Longwood (12-17, 8-12 Big South) to just 23.1% shooting over the fourth quarter and closed out the game on a 7-0 run, but it wasn't enough to bridge the gap as CSU fell for the second time in the 2019-20 season to the Lancers.

The teams battled through a tight first half with seven lead changes and one tie over the first 20 minutes. Myers put on a shooting clinic for the Bucs with 11 consecutive points over a span of 2:44 as the sophomore guard narrowed the gap down to 27-23 with 3:05 remaining in the second quarter. Kyla McMakin and Akila Smith provided the final baskets of the first half for the Lancers as Longwood went into the break with the 35-29 lead.

Longwood scored the first four points of the second half to stretch the lead to double-digits. The lead hovered around 10 points throughout a majority of the third quarter as Tyra Wright connected on a turnaround jumper at the foul line to put the score at 53-43 with 34 seconds remaining in the frame.

The Bucs were unable to bring the game any closer until the end as Longwood built an 18-point lead in the fourth quarter. CSU made it interesting late as the Bucs scored seven consecutive points, but it was not enough to close the gap on their way to falling to the Lancers.

Tierra Steede made her final game inside the Buc Dome one to remember as the senior posted her fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Ahlea Myers chipped in 12 points off the bench, including a stretch of three consecutive three-pointers in the second quarter, while Carmella Walker added 11 points and eight boards in the loss.

Akila Smith paced the Lancers with 16 points and 14 rebounds, while adding five blocked shots in the win. Kyla McMakin added 16 points and two steals, while Dayna Rouse had 10 points and six boards in the win.
