The Charleston Southern Women's basketball team got their first win under their belts on Monday night, defeating the Georgia College and State Bobcats 81-46 at the Buc Dome.
After GCSU jumped out to an 11-5 lead to start the game, CSU (1-0) went on a 9-0 run capped off by three-pointer by Sha'mya Leigh, eventually taking a 16-12 lead to end the first quarter.
In the second quarter is when the Bucs took control, outscoring the Bobcats 30-12. They shot 5-9 from the three-point line and 57% overall while only allowing GCSU to shoot a woeful 23.53% from the field. Overall, CSU made 11 three's on the night compared to only two from GCSU.
The defense by the Bucs highlighted the win in the second half, as they only allowed 22 points in the third and fourth quarter. CSU found their lead reach as high as 29 points in the third quarter after Catherine Alben made a jumper to extend the lead to 67-38.
The lead was stretched to 37 points in the final quarter after
Tori Gittens hit a three-pointer to make it 81-44. Gittens finished the night 2-5 from three, getting six points and five rebounds.
Freshmen Shine in Debut
Catherine Alben had a double-double in her college debut as she had 22 points and 13 rebounds in 31 minutes of play. She shot 9-22 from the field, and 10 of her 13 rebounds were on the defensive side. Alba Garcia added 15 points including 3-6 from the three-point line while adding a rebound and two steals on the defensive side.
Everyone Deserves a Second Chance
Second chance points became a theme in this game, as the Bucs were plus 19 when getting extra opportunities. They had 22 second-chance points compared to only three for the Bobcats. The Bucs out-rebounded the Bobcats 53-37, including 17 on the offensive side.
Bench Contributes Big
The Bucs' bench was sensational tonight, adding 47 points tonight compared to 16 for the Bobcats. As previously mentioned, Freshmen Garcia and Alben combined to score 37 points off the bench. Kajsa Ahlberg (5),
