Softball Completes Day Two of Cici's Pizza Lowcountry Classic

CHARLESTON - The Charleston Southern softball team hosted day two of the Cici's Pizza Lowcountry Classic on Saturday, taking on the UMass Minutemen and the Penn Quakers. The Bucs fell 8-5 to UMass and 5-1 to Penn in the nightcap.

GAME ONE

The Buccaneers were hitless through four innings and the visitors jumped out to a 3-0 lead, tallying two in the third and one in the fifth. Charlee Yourman broke up the no-hitter with a double in the fifth to give the Bucs their first hit of the game.

The Bucs rallied in the sixth, tying the game and taking their first lead ot the day. Emily Chandler led off with a single and Olivia Chuck entered as a pinch runner. Maddie Lee pinch hit and hit a single down the left foul line, moving Chuck to scoring position. Blakely Kingsmore followed with a single up the middle to load the bases with no outs.

Jordyn Dimond hit a double to center field bringing Chuck, Lee, and Kingsmore in to score tying the game 3-3. Carsten Sandvig kept the momentum going with a double to right field driving Dimond in to score, giving the Bucs the lead 4-3. A passed ball allowed Dimond to advance to third. Lorenzza Marcacci hit a sacrifice fly bringing Dimond home to extend the lead 5-3 headed into the seventh.

The Minutemen responded with a two-run-homer in the top of the seventh tying the game, and then took the lead 8-5 with a pair of hits.

Riley Lauffer started in the circle for the Bucs, and threw 6.1 innings with six strikeouts. Brenna Conley came in to relieve Lauffer in the seventh, facing two batters with one strikeout.

GAME TWO

Brenna Conley got the start for the Bucs in the circle, throwing three innings. Gianna Deluco made an appearance throwing two innings with two strikeouts only allowing one run. Kinsey Clopton entered in the sixth throwing two innings, allowing one run with one strikeout.

In the bottom of the first, Carsten Sandvig hit a single up the middle and then stole second to advance into scoring position, but the Bucs come up scoreless in the first.

In the fifth, Emily Chandler hit her second home run of the year, putting the Bucs on the board with their first and only run of the game. Later in the inning, Cadence Walding got her first hit of the season, with a single up the middle and Jordyn Dimond singled to center field, but the inning ended with a Buccaneer runner getting thrown out while trying to advance.

Charleston Southern will close out the Cici's Pizza Lowcountry Classic on Sunday, facing Akron at 11:00 AM.
