Julie Goodenough

For CSU: Coach Julie Goodenough begins her sixth season at the helm of the CSU women’s basketball program with an overall record of 63-90 (28-48 Big South Conference). Goodenough’s program lead the Big South Conference in 3-pt. FG’s made with 246, averaging 8.2 per game, 2nd in 3-pt FG percentage at .318, 3rd in scoring offense with 66.1 points per game, and 3rd in assists with 12.4 per game in 2010-2011.  Goodenough’s program also lead the Big South in attendance with an average of 634 fans per game.  Senior, Katie Tull was the top ranked player in the nation with 3-pointers made with 107, averaging 3.7 a game. The Buccaneers finished the 2010-2011 campaign with a 15-16 (8-8 in BSC) overall. Goodenough joined the CSU family for the 2006-07 campaign, and has continued building a foundation for a strong women’s basketball program at Charleston Southern University.

Since beginning her tenure at CSU, Goodenough has coached seven players who have been named to All-Conference teams. Keena Wicker was named a member of the Big South All-Conference Second Team during coach Goodenough’s first season. In 2007-08, Pam Tolbert earned All-Conference First Team honors; Crystal Robinson was named to the All-Freshman Team and Tina DeCarvalho earned Academic All-Conference laurels. The 2009-2010 campaign was a banner year for Charleston Southern as Tolbert earned Second-Team All-Conference honors; Ali Schwagmeyer and Kiki Rutledge found their names on the All-Freshman Team and DeCarvalho was again named to the Academic All-Conference Team. Tolbert was second in the conference in scoring last season, and she finished her storied career with 11 separate program records and two Big South Conference records.  In 2010-2011, the Buccaneers added to that impressive resume as Katie Tull took home Big South’s Player of the Year award along with being named 1st team All-Conference while Kelsey Wasmer took home 2nd team All-Conference and All-Academic accolades.

Coach Goodenough encourages her players to display good sportsmanship and a hard work ethic. Her teams have gained respect from opposing coaches in the conference as they have been awarded the coach-voted “Sportsmanship Award” for two of the last three seasons.

Coaching Career Prior to CSU: Goodenough posted a three-year stint at Oklahoma State University as the head women’s basketball coach. Goodenough also spent nine years as the head women’s basketball coach and four years as the Senior Women’s Administrator at Hardin-Simmons University prior to her stint at OSU. HSU, like CSU, is a Southern Baptist University. She was inducted into the HSU Athletics Hall of Fame in fall 2008.

Goodenough also coached at University of Texas at Arlington and Lubbock Christian University prior to becoming head coach at Hardin-Simmons University in 1993.  The FCA Big Country All-Star Game Most Valuable Player award garnishes Goodenough’s name.  This game is played annually in Abilene, Texas.  For her service, basketball excellence and humanitarianism Goodenough was blessed with this honor.

While at Hardin-Simmons, Goodenough coached three All-Americans, 34 All-Conference selections and 46 Academic All-Conference selections. She left the program as the winningest coach in school history, reaching 150 career wins in less than 200 career games. Hardin-Simmons captured seven conference championships and made six consecutive postseason appearances under Goodenough, who posted a 188-54 record in her nine seasons.

At Oklahoma State, Goodenough recruited and coached the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year (Nina Stone, currently a college coach, after a brief stint playing professionally in Europe), and posted the 19th best recruiting class in the country in her first full season. Five of the top 10 largest home crowds in school history occurred during Goodenough’s tenure, including the largest crowd to ever watch a home women’s basketball contest. Goodenough was 23-61 in three seasons, giving her a career record of 241-175 as a head coach.

Playing Career: Goodenough was a two-year captain and All-Conference selection at Western Texas College before transferring to the University of Texas at Arlington. At UTA, Goodenough was a two-year captain, an All-Conference selection and ranks 13th all-time in scoring for UT Arlington.

Personal: Goodenough graduated with a BA in Exercise Science from UT Arlington (’91), and her M.Ed. from Texas Tech (’93)… married to Rob Goodenough, current principal at River Oaks Middle School, two daughters, Bailey (15) and Macy (13)....Resides in Summerville, S.C.
