Late homer lifts Lafayette past Buccaneers, 9-6

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Lafayette's Alex Woinski hit a three-run home run to break a tie in the top of the ninth and give the visiting Leopards a 9-6 win over Charleston Southern on Tuesday night at CSU Ballpark.

CSU falls to 10-8 with the loss, while Lafayette improves to 2-6.

Woinski hit the first pitch from CSU reliever Jon Piriz out to left to give Lafayette the win in a back-and-forth game.

CSU rallied from a 5-2 deficit with four runs in the seventh inning, taking a brief one-run lead, but an RBI ground out from Lafayette's Steven Cohen tied the game in the top of the eighth at 6-6.

CSU put runners on for Chase Shelton in the eighth with a chance to give the Bucs the lead, but a diving stop by second baseman Jackson Kramer stole Shelton's fourth hit of the night and saved the lead for Lafayette.

The Bucs outhit Lafayette, 12-11, but left 11 runners on base.

Lafayette opened the game with back-to-back singles and Bucs' starter Dylan Lee slipped trying to field a would-be sacrifice bunt to immediately load the bases. Parker Hills two-run single and a sacrifice fly from Alex Woinski gave the Leopards a 3-0 lead after an inning.

Shelton and Andrew Widell fueled the Bucs' attack. Shelton had a two-run double in the seventh and finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Widell added a 3-for-5 night and scored twice.

Reliever Kyle Dyson (L, 0-1) took the loss for the Bucs in 2.2 innings of work.

Reliever Ryan Callahan (W, 1-0) grabbed the win for the Leopards working the last 2.1 innings.

CSU travels to Spartanburg on Wednesday to face USC Upstate. First pitch is at 6 p.m.
