NORTHBOUND: Bucs head to Longwood to open Big South series on Friday

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern returns to Big South play this weekend with a trip up I-95 to Farmville, Va. to face Longwood University. First pitch of Friday's opener is at 6 p.m. Saturday (4 p.m.) and Sunday's (1 p.m.) games will be carried live on the Big South Network.

The Bucs will try to build on a strong start after a series win on the road last weekend at Asheville. CSU's pitching – fueled by two strong starts – shutout the Bulldogs for the first 15 innings of the weekend as the Bucs won the first two in a stretch of 11-of-13 games on the road.

Junior Andrew Tomasovich (4-1) is tied for second in the Big South with four pitching victories and is among the top five in the league in strikeouts and ERA. CSU will need another strong start from him this weekend to get the series off on the right foot.

CSU vs. Longwood (Probable Pitching Matchups)

Friday, 6 p.m. – LHP Andrew Tomasovich (4-1, 1.97 ERA) vs. RHP Aaron Myers (2-3, 3.03 ERA)

Saturday, 4 p.m. – RHP Evan Raynor (1-1, 2.92 ERA) vs. LHP Brandon Vick (0-2, 9.82 ERA)

Sunday, 1 p.m. – RHP Kyle McDorman (1-1, 2.51 ERA) vs. RHP Travis Burnette (1-2, 4.38 ERA)

The Bucs are second in the Big South in team batting average and are starting to see their biggest bats heat up. Senior Andrew Widell leads the Bucs and is second in the league with a .416 average. He has four multi-hit games in his last seven. Juniors Cole Murphy and Brandon Burris are both above the .350 mark, while senior Chase Shelton is starting to see his average climb. He is now batting .305 and has 11 hits in the Bucs' last six games.

Senior Kyle McDorman will make his first Big South start this weekend. He'll start Sunday's game after working 4.2 scoreless innings at Asheville last Monday, the best outing of his career.

Longwood (8-11) opened its Big South campaign last weekend and found the going tough at Campbell. The Camels held the Lancers to just three runs in the first two games to sweep the opening series.

The Lancers picked up two midweek wins this week over Norfolk State and N.C. A&T in addition to topping Georgia two weeks ago (Georgia won the series, 2-1).
