FARMVILLE, Va. – Charleston Southern's Evan Raynor fired the Buccaneers' first complete game of the season to help CSU even their Big South series at Longwood with a 5-2 win on Saturday at Bolding Stadium.
Raynor (W, 2-1) and the Bucs led throughout after taking a 3-0 lead in the second inning. The junior scattered seven hits and had a career-high nine strikeouts with only one walk. He needed 118 pitches to give the Bucs a chance to win their second-straight Big South series to open conference play.
CSU (11-10, 3-2 Big South) took advantage of a Lancers' error to give Raynor all the run support he would need early in the game. Nate Blanchard and Robbie Streett singled to lead off the inning and set the table. Blanchard would score on an RBI ground out from Ryan Maxsim and CSU added two more on a throwing error by Longwood third baseman Brandon Harvell.
The Bucs added runs in the seventh and eighth to put the game out of reach. Chris Singleton drove home Cole Murphy with a sacrifice fly and Brandon Burris scored Streett with an RBI single in the eighth.
Murphy finished 3-for-5 and scored a run to lead CSU.
Harvell was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Brandon Vick (L, 0-3) gave up seven hits and fell victim to allowing three unearned runs.
The teams play the deciding game in the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
