CSU (12-11) is coming off a 3-2 win on Wednesday night at North Carolina Central in which the Bucs used a quality start from RHP Dylan Lee and an RBI single from Cole Murphy in the eighth to grab a much-needed win.
Charleston Southern is just 4-6 all-time against WVU, but the teams have not met since 1977. The game is the Bucs first against the current Big 12, but did face Nebraska when the Cornhuskers were part of the conference.
CSU was scheduled to open West Virginia's new stadium this weekend, but record snowfall set back construction this winter. The Mountaineers will return the trip to CSU to open the 2016 season.
The ties for the weekend are close for CSU head coach Stuart Lake. WVU head coach Randy Mazey coached at CSU from 1994-1996. Lake was a senior at CSU during Mazey's first season at the helm of the Buccaneer ship.
"Coach Mazey coached me as a senior and we've stayed friends," Lake said Thursday. "I thought this would be a good experience for our guys. Most of them have never been to this part of the country and all are very excited to get to face a Big 12 team in a weekend setting. They were hoping to open their new stadium this weekend and will come to CSU Ballpark next season. "
The series will serve as a reunion for Mazey, who earned his first head coaching opportunity at Charleston Southern, accepting the position at the age of 27 in 1994. After going 36-60 in his first two seasons, he led a CSU team, picked to finish last in the 1996 preseason coaches' poll, to an NCAA Regional appearance, the Buccaneers first-ever bid, and a 30-24-1 mark, the team's first winning season since 1988 and its second 30-win season in school history.
The Bucs' Cole Murphy has had a mult-hit game in 7 of his team's last 12 games and is batting .358. Senior 1B/OF Chase Shelton has seen his career hits total climb to 231 and needs 24 hits to tie Nick Chinners for CSU's all-time mark. He is batting .271 this season with two home runs.
CSU is second in the Big South behind Campbell with a team .294 batting average and lead the league with a .387 on-base percentage.
On the mound, CSU's 238 strikeouts are among the nation's best and are 26 more than the next highest total in conference play. Friday starter Andrew Tomasovich is third in the Big South with 10.9 strikeouts per nine innings.
West Virginia (12-10) has a series win over Clemson this season to go with wins against Texas and Baylor in Big 12 play. Sunday starter RHP Chad Donato has a team-leading 1.85 ERA among regular starters and holds opponents to a .248 batting average.
