BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Starter Andrew Tomasovich worked 8.2 innings to pick up his sixth win and Chase Shelton became the third Buccaneer in program history with 250 career hits to lead Charleston Southern past Campbell on Friday night, 5-3.
CSU, which has won five straight games, moves to 17-18 overall and 7-6 in Big South play, while Campbell falls to 25-13 and 8-8 in league play. Saturday's schedule has been adjusted to a doubleheader at 2 p.m. The teams will not play on Sunday.
Tomasovich (W, 6-3) scattered seven hits and struck out three to work into the ninth. He held the Camels to a lone run through six innings as CSU built a 5-1 lead. Closer Denis Buckley (S, 3) came on to face the final two batters to get the Bucs out of a jam with the tying run on in the ninth.
CSU took advantage of four Campbell errors to score four unearned runs, but the Buc offense kept the pressure on all night, led by Shelton (251 career hits). The senior went 3-for-4 and scored the go-ahead run for the Bucs' in the sixth. He needs five hits to pass Nick Chinners (255) as CSU's all-time hits leader.
CSU had 10 hits in the game, five coming in the four-run sixth. Brian Dye and Nate Blanchard delivered RBI singles to go with hits from Shelton and Ryan Maxsim to fuel the decisive inning. Sam Remick's bunt single led to a throwing error by starter Heath Bowers (L, 6-3) to score the final run on the frame for CSU.
Campbell's Kyle Leady hit a solo home run in the first to give his a team an early 1-0 lead, but Tomasovich would hold CU scoreless to one run until the seventh.
The Camels cut the lead to 5-2 in the seventh and put the tying run on in the ninth, but Buckley got a groundout from the second batter he faced to end the game.
Blanchard added a 2-for-5 day with an RBI, while Maxsim was 2-for-3 and scored twice.
Campbell DH Matt Parrish was 3-for-4 with an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the ninth.
