Fourteen strikeouts lift Bucs past The Citadel, 7-2

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Six Charleston Southern pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts as the Buccaneers shutdown The Citadel on Tuesday night at CSU Ballpark, 7-2.

The win gives CSU (21-22) a series split with The Citadel (18-25) this season. The Bucs now have an eight-day break for final exams before traveling to Furman next Wednesday (May 6).

Five different Bucs had strikeouts in the game. The teams combined to use 13 pitchers.

Junior Andrew Tomasovich (W, 7-4) struck out four of the five batters he faced to pick up the first relief win of his career. He came on with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth and the game tied 2-2. Starter Jon Piriz struck out five in 3.2 innings, allowing one earned run. Relievers Denis Buckley and Chayce Hubbard both added two strikeouts in 1.1 innings to shutdown The Citadel in the final innings.

"I thought Piriz gave us a great start," CSU head coach Stuart Lake said. "I told him to treat it like a tournament where you have to go in and give us a few great innings, and he did. We've never really seen Andrew in relief, but he came in an important spot and got the win. Then those last two bullpen guys shut it down."

The Bucs manufactured enough offense early to let their bats get hot late, scoring two runs in the sixth and seventh to put the game away.

Nate Blanchard was 3-for-3 and had three RBI to lead CSU, which finished with 13 hits. Sam Remick added a 2-for-3 day with a pair of RBIs and a bunt on a squeeze play that stopped on the chalk.

"It's been hard to figure out," Lake said of the Bucs' inconsistent offense.  "We played a different-type game where we had to bunt for a few hits, but our hitters hung tough and battled. I think we ended up with double-digit hits. This is a good win for us with exams coming up."

CSU's Kevin Hickey was 2-for-3 and scored twice to jump-start the Bucs early. An infield single from Blanchard and an RBI single by Remick to right scored the Bucs' first two run as CSU took a 2-0 lead in the second.

Blanchard and Remick added RBI singles in the sixth as the Bucs broke a 2-2 tie.

Austin Mapes was 3-for-5 with a run scored to lead The Citadel.

Jacob Watcher (L, 0-2) worked 2.2 innings for the Bulldogs and took the loss.
