Bucs outlast Furman in 11 innings, 7-5

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Cole Murphy had a pair of extra-base hits in extra innings and reliever Joe Pistacchio worked a perfect 11th inning as Charleston Southern outlasted Furman, 7-5, on Wednesday night at Latham Field.

Murphy had a leadoff triple in the 10th to spark the Buccaneers to a 5-4 lead, but Furman answered, knotting the game on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the 10th. The Bucs' junior shortstop delivered again, this time with an RBI double in the 11th to plate an insurance run and give CSU a win to start its five-game road trip.

CSU (22-22) took the lead in the 11th on a two-out error by the Paladins. First baseman Jordan Towarnicky momentarily saved the go-ahead run on a diving stop of a Chase Shelton ground ball, but overshot pitcher Billy Greenfield covering first to allow Nate Blanchard to scamper home to give CSU a 6-5 lead.

Pistacchio (S, 1), on a night where CSU used seven pitchers, gave the Bucs their quickest inning when they needed it most. The senior had a strikeout and two ground balls to erase any thoughts Furman had of rallying again.

Closer Denis Buckley (W, 3-2) came on to work a scoreless ninth and worked out of a jam in the 10th to extend the game.

The Bucs led 4-1 after five innings. Brian Dye had a two-run double to spark a three-run fifth. Dye was 1-for-4 and has a 16-game hitting streak, CSU's longest of the season. Blanchard added a 2-for-5 night and scored twice and has a 15-game hitting streak.

Furman (22-26) tied the game in the sixth, loading the bases off of starter Dylan Lee. A sacrifice fly by Chris Ohmstede and RBI single from Jordan Simpson helped the Paladins knot the game at 4-4. Lee worked five innings, surrendering four earned runs and striking out four.

CSU took a brief 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Andrew Widell in the second, but a solo home run from Blake Chisolm tied the game, 1-1.

The Bucs open a three-game series at Radford on Friday night. The opener will be shown live on ESPN3 at 6:30 p.m.
