BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Coastal Carolina starter Shane Sawczak held Charleston Southern to one hit in seven innings of work and G.K. Young hit a three-run home run to lift the Chanticleers to a 10-0 win in the opener of the 2015 Big South Baseball Championship presented by Hardee's and Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
Coastal advances to face the winner of No. 3 Winthrop and No. 6 Campbell on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Charleston Southern will face the loser on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in an elimination game.
Sawczak crossed up the Bucs and held CSU without a hit until a single by Sly Edwards in the fourth.
"It was very disappointing," CSU head coach Stuart Lake said. "We talked about doing what they did in getting out to an early lead and playing behind their starter. Credit to (Sawczak), seven innings, no runs, one hit; that's a quality start if there ever was one."
Coastal put up three runs on Bucs' starter Evan Raynor (L, 5-4) in the first. A pair of infield singles and a two-out, RBI single by Tyler Chadwick gave the Chanticleers a 3-0 lead after one and CSU couldn't muster enough offense to threaten.
Young's blast to right off of Bucs' reliever Kyle Dyson pushed the Coastal lead to 7-0 at the time and put the game out of reach.
The Bucs will try to bounce back in the morning and extend their stay. CSU swept Campbell in the regular season and was swept by Winthrop.
"Each team is different," Lake added. "We've won seven in-a-row and lost seven. We'll be playing a team that has lost just like we have. Energy starts with your starting pitcher and we'll have Andrew Tomasovich going, he'll give us the start we need."
Robbie Street had a pinch-hit double in the eighth for CSU's second hit and Chase Shelton was robbed of extra bases by a diving catch by Anthony Marks in the seventh.
