Butler rallies to grab series finale from Bucs in 11 innings, 4-3

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Butler's Connor Dall delivered a bases-loaded, sacrifice fly in the 11th inning to plate the game-winning run in a 4-3 win over Charleston Southern the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Joe Riley Park.

Butler improves to 1-6 with the win, while the Bucs fall to 3-3 overall.

Dall's sac fly off of Bucs' reliever Evan Nations (L, 0-1) pushed home Tyler Houston to give Butler the lead in the top of the 11th. The Bucs loaded the bases in the bottom half behind a single from Mike Sconzo and a walk to Mason McClellan, but Butler's Connor Mitchell (W, 1-0) got Nate Blanchard to line out to first to end the game.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the eighth to take a 3-2 lead, but the Bucs took advantage of an error in the ninth to extend back-and-forth the game. Butler's Chris Marras' tripled in the eighth with two outs to push the go ahead run across against Adam Andrew (L, 0-1).

The Bucs took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Chris Singleton. The sophomore doubled and scored the tying run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Maksim

CSU's Cole Murphy hit a solo home run in the fifth to tie the game and the Bucs appeared to take the lead when Nate Blanchard beat out a throw to first to take away a double play. Mike Sconzo was called for intereference at second on the play, taking the go-ahead run off the board.

The Bucs made a few base-running errors in the loss. Senior Sly Edwards tripled deep to left center in the first, but hesitated when the throw got away from BU third baseman Mike Kseniak and was thrown out the plate to end the Bucs' first.

The loss spoiled a strong start by CSU's Jon Piriz. A week after being hit in the head with a line drive, Piriz bounced back, surrendering two hits and an unearned run in seven innings. He struck out a CSU season-high eight batters.

CSU outhit Butler, 13-7, but couldn't get the big swing with runners on. The Bucs left 10 on base.

Five Bucs had two hits in the game. Brandon Burris was 2-for-5. He doubled and scored on the Singleton sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Marras had both of Butler's extra-base hits, while Tyler Houston was 2-for-5 and scored twice.

CSU travels to Athens, Ga. for a two-game series with the Georgia Bulldogs on Tuesday and Wednesday.
