MOUNT PLESANT, S.C. – Charleston Southern gave up three unearned runs and committed four errors in a tough 4-1 loss to No. 23 College of Charleston on Wednesday night at Patriots Point.
CofC (12-5) scored twice in the third and added a run in the fourth – all unearned – to survive the low-scoring affair. CSU (8-9) got a solid start from Evan Nations (L, 0-2) and scoreless relief appearances from Cody Maw and Cody Smith to keep the Buccaneers close, but the defensive breakdowns cost CSU its early lead.
CSU grabbed a quick 1-0 edge on an RBI single by Mason McClellan in the first off of CofC starter Eric Bauer. Sly Edwards' one-out single was the first of three singles for the Bucs in the inning. Chris Singleton singled and was thrown out trying to take third just after Edwards crossed home to end the threat.
Starter Evan Nations (L, 0-2) worked out of a jam in the first with a little helped from his right leg. Jake Maziar's line drive ricocheted off of Nations to CSU shortstop Cole Murphy to start an inning-ending double play.
CofC took a 2-1 lead in the third, capitalizing on a throwing error by CSU third baseman Nate Blanchard with two earned runs. Ryan Brown followed with a single off the glove of Murphy.
A throwing error by catcher Wes Achenbrenner moved the runners up and Bradley Jones tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI groundout. Maziar added an RBI single to give CofC a 2-1 lead. A throwing error by Murphy led to a third unearned Cougar run in the fourth.
The Bucs managed six hits, but never got going offensively after the first. Singleton and McClellan were both 2-of-4 for the Bucs.
CofC's Ryan Brown was 2-for-3 and scored a run. Bauer (W, 1-0) worked six innings, scattering four hits and striking out two for the Cougars. Anthony Burke (S, 1) worked three scoreless innings to close out the win.
CSU opens a three-game series with George Washington on Friday at 6 p.m. at CSU Ballpark.
