CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern stranded 13 runners – five in its final two at-bats – to drop its Big South opener to Campbell on Thursday night at CSU Ballpark, 5-4.
SCHEDULE CHANGE: Friday's game has been moved up to 1 p.m. at CSU Ballpark.
Campbell (13-10, 0-1) rallied for two runs in the eighth inning off the Bucs' bullpen. CSU (10-12, 0-1 Big South) walked two batters and hit another to let a one-run lead slip away.
The Buccaneers loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth. Closer Erik Dowse (S, 2) walked three, but struck out Bucs' catcher Mike Sconzo to end the game. CSU outhit Campbell, 9-5, but was just 1-of-16 with runners in scoring position.
CSU starter Evan Raynor gave up a three-run homer in the second inning for his only blemish of the night. He did not allow a hit over his final five innings as CSU climbed out of a 3-0 hole. He finished with nine strikeouts and one walk in seven innings of work.
Campbell's Ben Calvano helped the Camels get to Raynor early. His three-run home run in the second quickly built a 3-0 lead. Campbell got to Raynor for three hits in the inning, including Calvano's first blast of the season.
CSU got a run back in the bottom of the second when Mason McClellan lead off with a solo home run, his first of the season. CSU put runners on first and third with two outs, but Calvano's diving catch in centerfield robbed Nate Blanchard of hit and saved at least one run.
Edwards finished 2-for-5 for the Bucs and scored twice. Nate Blanchard doubled in the first inning, but was stranded on third. He was 1-for-3 with two walks.
Campbell's Michael Horrell (W, 3-2) worked four solid innings for the Camels. He gave up four hits and an earned run. Three Campbell pitchers combined for eight strikeouts
