Bucs fall in series opener to Longwood, 4-1

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Longwood scored four unearned runs in the sixth inning to work past Charleston Southern in their Big South series opener on Saturday afternoon at CSU Ballpark, 4-1.

A two-out, two-run double by Drew Kitson sparked the Lancers' decisive inning after a CSU error. LWU starter Travis Burnette (W, 4-1) worked 6.2 innings and struck out four to pick up the win. Reliever Ryan Jones (S, 3) worked the 2.1 innings to pick up his third save, he struck out three.

The loss spoiled a solid start by Evan Raynor (L, 4-2). He struck out eight in 6.2, giving up the four unearned runs. Longwood had only five hits off of Raynor, but four came in the sixth. Longwood capitalized after a Bucs' error gave LWU extra life.

Sammy Miller reached on an error by Nate Blanchard and scored on an RBI single by Michael Osinski to knot the game. Connar Bastaich followed with a second RBI single to give LU a 2-1 lead and Drew Kitson added a two-run double to push the lead out to 4-1 with four unearned runs.

CSU struck first in the fifth. The Bucs stacked up three singles to take a 1-0 lead. Cole Murphy led off with a single to left and scored on an RBI groundout by Kevin Hickey. The Bucs threatened with runners on the corners and one out, but Lancers' third baseman Brandon Harvell snared a Sly Edwards grounder and threw out Hickey at the plate to keep the damage minimal.

CSU loaded the bases in the seventh on singles by Mike Sconzo and Hickey. Reliever Ryan Jones came on and walked Sly Edwards, but bounced back with a strikeout of Chris Singleton to tend the threat.

Sconzo was 2-for-4 to lead CSU. The Bucs left eight runners on base.

DH Alex Lewis was 3-for-4 with a run scored to lead LWU.

The two teams play the second game of the series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
