Longwood starts fast in 6-2 win over Bucs

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Longwood scored five early runs to race to a 6-2 win over Charleston Southern on Sunday at CSU Ballpark.

Longwood improves to 17-11 overall and 5-3 in Big South play. CSU falls to 11-16 and 1-4 in conference play.

The Lancers scored four runs in the second inning to build all the offense they would need. Carlos Garrido's two-run double was the key blow in a four-run second as Longwood jumped on CSU starter Daniel Johnson (L, 3-3) early. A bunt single by Hayes Nelson and a sacrifice fly by Drew Kitson added to LWU's quick start.

The Buccaneers got an RBI single from Brandon Burris in the fourth and an RBI double from Kevin Hickey in the sixth, but went just 3-for-18 with runners on in the loss.

CSU left nine runners on base and couldn't get the big hit off of Lancer's starter Steven Farkas (W, 2-1). Farkas worked 5.2 innings, striking out three and walking three, but held CSU to seven hits, six singles.

Sly Edwards led the Bucs going 2-for-4 with a walk. Kevin Hickey added a 2-for-3 day with an RBI.

First baseman Connar Bastaich was 3-for-4 and scored a run, while Brandon Harvell was 3-for-3 with an RBI and scored twice. Relievers Cody Wager and Cody Boydstun combined for 3.1 of scoreless relief.

The teams meet in the series finale on Monday at 2 p.m.
