CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern begins the Blue-Gold World Series as the Buccaneers open Parents/Alumni Weekend at the CSU Ballpark. First pitch of the five-game Blue-Gold Fall World Series schedule is slated for Thursday night underneath the lights at 6:30 p.m.
Included among the weekend festivities are an Alumni Home Run Derby underneath the lights, the Building Buccaneer Baseball golf tournament, and the groundbreaking ceremony for the Singleton Baseball Complex.
Friday's groundbreaking ceremony will begin at 4 p.m. at CSU Ballpark and is open to the public. CSU junior outfielder Chris Singleton, head baseball coach Stuart Lake, university president Dr. Jairy Hunter and North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey are all scheduled to speak.
The Singleton Baseball Complex will celebrate the life and legacy of Singleton's mother, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, one of nine victims in June 2015's shooting at Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston.
Many CSU alumni and local businesses have stepped up to support the $1.5 million project. The 3,500 square-foot building will feature a baseball locker room, training room, and the Sharonda Coleman-Singleton Enrichment Center, as well as office space for coaches and staff. The facility will also have a stadium courtyard and a "Love is Stronger" memorial plaza at the entryway to CSU Ballpark.
