CSU Baseball Opens Fall Practice Friday Afternoon
CHARLESTON, S.C. – After a season in which the team made the Big South Conference tournament and picked up multiple wins over Top-25 teams, Charleston Southern baseball returns to the diamond Friday afternoon.
The 2018 season saw two wins over ranked SEC teams Georgia and South Carolina. CSU's win over the Bulldogs came in walkoff fashion while the road win against the Gamecocks was the first since the 2014 season.
The Bucs were also among the nation's best in pitching sitting 10th in strikeout-to-walk ratio and 21st in walks per nine innings. Headlining the pitching staff was senior closer Cody Smith, who was selected in the 39th Round of the MLB Draft.
"This is an exciting time of year as we get to see our newcomers on the field as a group and the progress that our returning players made in the offseason," said head coach Adam Ward. "We've had a productive fall up to this point with players putting in a lot of work in the weight room and in their individual skill sessions. With us finally being able to play two games against outside competition this fall, I'm really looking forward to seeing how this work pays off in live game situations."
Friday's practice kicks off a fall slate that runs through October 28 that includes two home scrimmages and the annual Fall World Series October 26, 27 and 28 to cap-off the season.
Under Ward's two years of guidance, the Bucs have improved in the Big South standings, led the conference in many statistical categories and gathered marquee wins over ranked programs like Georgia and South Carolina.
The fall slate will see the Bucs host two scrimmages and the Navy/Gold World Series as well as 20-plus team practices. All scrimmages and the World Series are free and open to the public.
