CHARLESTON, S.C. - Saturday night football at Buccaneer Field is on the slate for Charleston Southern as the Buccaneers announced their home kickoff times for the 2017 season. The Bucs will kick off four home games at 6 p.m., while the Senior Day regular season finale against Liberty is set for a noon start time.
Since lights were added to Buccaneer Field in 2014, CSU has seen an uptick in attendance. The program has averaged 4,512 fans in attendance across eight night games over the last three years.
The decision to go with more games under the lights comes as the Buccaneers look to continue their recent success on the playing field. CSU captured its second consecutive Big South Conference championship and FCS playoff berth in 2016. The Bucs beat three ranked teams in the process, including convincing victories over Liberty and Kennesaw State to clinch the league crown. CSU landed a league-high 11 players on the All-Big South teams, headlined by the Defensive (Anthony Ellis) and Special Teams (Darius Hammond) Players of the Year.
"Since we've put in the lights, our fans have shown us that they favor night games," Small said. "We want to support our team with the largest crowd possible and it's clear to us that our fans and our students really enjoy night games."
Head coach Mark Tucker looks forward to the atmosphere that night football creates for the student body and the team at Buccaneer Field
"Night football games are about the atmosphere," Tucker commented. "When you play games at night, you're creating an event and there's a build-up during the day that makes game time that much better. The people who come to see us play enjoy night games and we want to give them and our student body an opportunity to enjoy a great atmosphere at the game and cheer on the Bucs."
CSU opens its home season with a 6 p.m. kickoff against Division II Point on September 23. The Bucs will kick off at 6 p.m. again one week later against Mississippi Valley State, of the SWAC.
The Bucs' contest against Savannah State will kick off at 6 p.m. at Buccaneer Field. CSU's Homecoming matchup against Big South foe Monmouth on October 28 is also scheduled for a 6 p.m. start time.
CSU's regular season finale and Senior Day on November 18 against Liberty is set for a noon kickoff.
All Big South Conference games and times are subject to change to accommodate television. The TV schedule is expected to be released in July, coinciding with Big South Football Media Day.
CSU opens the season on September 2 in Starkville, Miss. against Mississippi State.
