CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern's Anthony Ellis and Frank Cirone will represent the Bucs at the 2017 Big South Conference Football Media Day in Charlotte, N.C. this Tuesday, July 18. Live coverage of the Big South's annual preseason event will be available Tuesday on ESPN3 and the Big South Network.
Along with CSU head coach Mark Tucker, Ellis and Cirone will preview the 2017 team as the Bucs look to build off of back-to-back conference championships and FCS Playoff bids. CSU is the two-time defending Big South champion and was ranked 16th in the Athlon Sports Preseason FCS Top 25 poll. Ellis and Cirone are two of five returning all-conference picks from a roster that features 16 returning starters from last season's squad.
The 2016 Big South Defensive Player of the Year, Ellis lived up to his preseason billing last year, leading the Big South in sacks (7.0) and tackles for loss (16.0) while spearheading a dominant defensive unit for the second consecutive season. He had his best performance of the year in CSU's biggest game, tallying a sack and 3.5 TFL to earn Big South Defensive Player of the Week honors in a 48-26 road rout of Liberty with first place at stake. Ellis was at the forefront of a defensive effort that limited the Flames to 75 first-half yards as the Bucs built a 31-6 halftime lead in the must-win game.
Cirone, a redshirt senior offensive lineman from Naples, Fla., played through injuries to start nine games and help CSU finish sixth nationally in rushing (266.5 ypg). A 2016 Big South First Team All-Conference selection, Cirone helped CSU total 500-plus yards of offense four times and 30-plus points six times. He was a central part of the nation's 16th-ranked scoring offense and helped Mike Holloway lead the nation in yards per carry in 2016.
