Ellis and Tekac earn Big South Football weekly honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) - Charleston Southern defensive end Anthony Ellis and junior placekicker Tyler Tekac garnered Big South football weekly honors as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon. Ellis earned Defensive Player of the Week recognition, while Tekac received co-Special Teams Player of the Week honors following their performances in CSU's win over Gardner-Webb.

Ellis set a Big South record with 5.5 tackles for loss and tied career-highs with 12 tackles and 2.5 sacks in leading CSU to the 10-9 win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday afternoon. Ellis recorded nine tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in the first half as the Bucs limited the Runnin' Bulldogs to just 85 offensive yards over the first 30 minutes.

He added a late sack in the fourth quarter and 1.5 tackles for loss after the half to establish a new Big South record. Ellis' mark of 5.5 tackles for loss eclipses the old Big South standard of 5.0 tackles for loss that was set/tied seven different occasions. He added four quarterback hurries as Ellis harassed Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Tyrell Maxwell multiple ways as the Bucs limited the conference's leading rusher to 82 passing yards and 59 rushing yards in the game.

Ellis leads the Big South with 8.0 sacks and is currently second in the conference with 12.5 tackles for loss.

Tyler Tekac kept CSU's conference title hopes alive with a 43-yard game-winning field goal as time expired in the Bucs 10-9 win over Gardner-Webb. With one second remaining on the clock, the Bucs special teams unit got the snap off in time and Tekac connected on the game-winner to help CSU continue its road conference winning streak.

It was Tekac's fourth 40-yard field goal of the season. He was also perfect on his lone extra point attempt.

Kennesaw State redshirt-junior quarterback Chandler Burks has been named the Big South Football Offensive Player of the Week. Kennesaw State kicker Justin Thompson joined Tekac as the Co-Special Teams Players of the Week, while Monmouth running back Pete Guerriero is the Freshman of the Week.
