Bucs prepare for second scrimmage this weekend; Q&A with long snapper Ethan Ray

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern football continued its spring practice swing this week as the Buccaneers gear up for the second scrimmage of the spring season this weekend.

CSU is scheduled to hit the field on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. for their second spring scrimmage leading up to the Spring Game scheduled for April 13.

The energy and pace has continued over the first weeks of the spring season and CSU looks to continue it this weekend in an unusual setting for the players with the afternoon scrimmage time. All practices thus far this spring have been carried out at 6 a.m.

The Saturday scrimmage is open to the public at Buccaneer Field.

Q&A with rising redshirt junior long snapper Ethan Ray
What has the energy been like around the first few weeks of practices?

"It's been really good, it feels like we're improving every day. We've been trying to keep those positive vibes going and cut out all the negatives that have happened over the last few years."

Though you have the same position coach (David Padilla), what is your impression of the new staff?
"It's been really positive, they've been keeping the energy and locker room positive. We just need to keep building on what we've been doing in these first practices and take it day by day."

One of the positives last year was your special teams unit, specifically the punt team. How do you look to improve beyond last year?
"We want to be the top punting team in the country this year, that's our goal and I think we'll be upset if we don't reach that goal."

As a junior now, what have you been doing to become more of a leader on this team?
"I just want to make sure the guys get their study hall hours and that their transition to college is going smoothly for them. I think it's important that I can help them adapt to the college system, because we've got several guys that were playing in high school a year or a year and a half ago. I just want to make that jump as smooth as it can be for them."
