CHARLESTON, S.C. - Former Charleston Southern All-American defensive back James Allen has landed his first professional football contract, signing with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.
Allen signed with the Tiger-Cats late last week and is listed as a defensive back. The Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. native joins a strong roster as Hamilton earned a playoff berth last season and translated that into a Division Finals appearance before falling to the Ottawa Redblacks.
Allen earned All-American honors from two different organizations in his senior season. The 5-8 corner received Second Team honors from both the Associated Press and HERO Sports.
He put together one of the best seasons by a defensive back in Big South Conference history on his way to earning First Team honors. Allen led the Big South with six interceptions and returned a CSU and conference-record three for touchdowns in 2018.
He tied for the FCS lead in pick-sixes on the year and is fifth in FCS in passes defended with 1.5 per game. Allen saved his best game of the season for his final conference game recording three interceptions and returned one 52 yards for a score in CSU's 12-7 win over Campbell.
The Tiger-Cats open the preseason at the Ottawa Redblacks on June 1, before opening the regular on June 13 at home against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
