CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern announced its 2016-17 non-conference schedule on Tuesday. The 11-game slate features five home games as well as four road contests against power conference opponents.
CSU tips off the campaign with a familiar foe as it travels to meet Florida State on Saturday, Nov. 12. The game marks the fourth straight year, and fifth time in the last six seasons, CSU makes the trip to Tallahassee. Coach Barclay Radebaugh's Bucs return to the friendly confines of the Buc Dome three days later to tip off the home schedule against Columbia International. On Nov. 19, CSU concludes its opening week of play by entertaining in-state opponent, USC Upstate.
Radebaugh is enthused to see how his team comes together over the summer and the preseason. CSU is looking to return to the form that saw the program capture Big South Conference regular season championships and NIT bids in 2013 and 2015.
"We're excited about meeting the challenges our out-of-conference schedule presents," Radebaugh said. "We play a variety of opponents that will prepare us in different ways for the rigors of Big South play. Our young group will have a chance to improve and really have their mettle tested as we look to build toward being at our best when the 18-game league slate arrives."
Two of CSU's final three games of November come on the road with trips to Abilene Christian (Nov. 22) and Alabama (Nov. 29). The clash against the Crimson Tide will be the Bucs' third in the last five seasons. In between, CSU hosts Toccoa Falls in a post-Thanksgiving matchup on Saturday, Nov. 26.
The month of December begins with a return visit from Abilene Christian on Dec. 3, with the home-and-home series offering a feel for Big South play. CSU's final non-conference home game is set for Dec. 10 against Johnson & Wales, following a break for final exams.
CSU once again rounds out its preparation for the 18-game Big South slate with a challenging string of road games. The three-game stretch starts with a trip to former league opponent, VMI, on Tuesday, Dec. 13. A young team featuring returning All-Big South Freshman performer Armel Potter will then test its mettle at Georgia (Dec. 17) and at Virginia Tech (Dec. 20) before entering the Christmas break.
The Big South Conference schedule will be released later this summer. The entire 11-game non-conference schedule is detailed below. All times are TBD.
