Q&A with junior forward Javis Howard (Social Science major at CSU)
Q: How would you summarize preseason practice to this point?
A: It's been competitive, I would say. We're getting better. We're making strides. I think we're in a good spot right now as far as the process in the preseason. We had an advantage in the summer to get better on the Toronto trip. I'm feeling really good about our team going into the scrimmage coming up this Friday.
Q: How have you tried to mentor some of the new players?
A: The process is the biggest thing and when you're a freshman going through that, sometimes you're gonna buckle. I think I've been able to learn a lot in my three years and I've used that time to get better. A lot less drops or falls, mentally and physically, not getting tired and all that so I think that's the biggest thing for me right now.
Q: Ahmad Smith is your post coach. How has he helped improve your game?
A: He's taken every part of my game and just perfected it, from the smallest things. Mostly, it's mental with just helping me on the block to get better position. He's helped me be more aggressive with the ball, quicker moves and passing. We've got a lot of great players around me and I need to utilize my post skills to get them open.
Q: What are your favorite sports aside from basketball?
A: Actually, I don't really watch other sports. I'll watch the best football games. I'm not really an addict that's going to try to catch every game. If there's a big game on TV, I'll try to catch it.
Q: What else do you like to do?
A: I like to relax. I think I'm an avid YouTube watcher. I really like watching videos on my favorite player, LeBron James. Even just comedians like Kevin Hart. And I like kicking it with my teammates. That's the easiest thing. I'm really into Netflix. When I'm not doing basketball or schoolwork and have a window, I like to watch Netflix. I'm watching this show called Supernatural right now.
Q: Plans for after graduation?
A: Most definitely, I want to go professionally but most importantly, I want to have a good foundation of education to make sure I'm good in the long, long run. Most definitely, I want to play professionally and try to make something happen.
