CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern returns from Christmas break to entertain Piedmont International on Sunday at the Buc Dome. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
CSU (5-7) is looking to cap its non-conference slate on a high note in its first game in nine days. The 16-game Big South Conference schedule awaits, starting with a visit from High Point next Saturday, Jan. 5. Piedmont International (4-7) will be playing for the first time since Dec. 3, when the Bruins fell to Virginia State 95-67. PIU is an NCCAA program based out of Winston-Salem, and the Bruins are coached by former Wake Forest and NBA star Josh Howard.
Last time out, the Bucs dispatched of Johnson & Wales 86-61 behind 15 made three-pointers and 25 forced turnovers. Christian Keeling tallied a double-double of 26 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, while Travis McConico snatched a career-high 17 boards, including 11 on the offensive glass.
CSU and PIU have both played Johnson & Wales and Columbia International. The Bucs cruised to victories over each, while PIU lost to CIU by four points and edged Johnson & Wales by six.
Keeling continues ascent up scoring list
Keeling jumped from 15th to 11th on CSU's all-time scoring list with 26 points against Johnson & Wales. The Augusta, Ga., native is just 43 points away from tying David Oliver for tenth place.
Bucs rank high in effort stats
CSU currently ranks second nationally in turnovers forced, fifth in turnover margin, seventh in steals per game and ninth in offensive rebounds per game. The Bucs have forced 124 turnovers in their five wins, and have created at least 20 turnovers seven times.
LeXander and Shuler contributing immediately
Duncan LeXander and Dontrell Shuler have quickly emerged as impact freshmen for CSU. LeXander is CSU's second-leading rebounder, leading three-point shooter and third-leading scorer. Shuler is the Bucs' second-leading scorer. They are two of seven freshmen on a young Bucs' roster comprised of 12 underclassmen.
