AIKEN, S.C. – Charleston Southern sits in 17th place through 36 holes at The Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate, hosted by USC Aiken. Final round play at the Palmetto Golf Club is set to begin Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
Junior Jacques Wilson paced the Bucs and is in the top half of the field in a tie for 42nd place after carding a pair of three-over 73's. Jake Ezell fired the round of the day for CSU, a second round 69, and is one shot behind Wilson in a tie for 49th.
Virginia, third nationally in the latest Golfstat rankings, holds the lead after posting an impressive 17-under par total. Sixteenth-ranked Clemson is just three shots off the pace, thanks in large part to a nine-under opening round that was the best of the day. Augusta, at two-under, is the only other club in the 18-team field in red numbers.
Virginia's Derek Bard and Clemson's Doc Redman are tied atop the individual leaderboard at six-under 134. Liberty's Isaiah Logue and Virginia's Thomas Walsh are one off the pace.
Wilson was even par on the back nine in the morning and afternoon to lead coach Todd Selders' Bucs. Ezell played a near flawless back nine, rolling home birdie putts at the par-five 10th, par-four 12th and par-four 15th to go in in 33.
Derrick Villarreal (T-78th (+14 (154)), Austin James (T-80th (+15 (155)) and David Eller (89th (+28 (168)) struggled on day one for CSU. Villarreal tallied an opening round 76 for the best score between those three players.
This event is part of a busy week for CSU. Following Tuesday's action, the Bucs will right back at it this Saturday and Sunday at the General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach.
