SAPPHIRE, N.C. – Charleston Southern senior Art Griffin finished tied for tenth place to pace the Bucs at the season-opening Hummingbird Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Sapphire. Griffin carded a final round even-par 71 to tally a composite score of 1-over 214, earning his first top-ten showing at CSU.
The Bucs finished tied for 10th place in the 13-team field after shooting 13-over par 297 in Tuesday's third round. Gardner-Webb won the team title with a tournament 54-hole record of +4 297. The Runnin' Bulldogs put together back-to-back rounds in red numbers on Monday to take control, and held off Elon by three strokes to finish atop the field. Clemson's Colby Patton established a new individual event record to earn medalist honors with a -11 total. Central Arkansas's Lewis George and Duke's Evan Katz tied for second place at -9.
Griffin was three-over on Tuesday following a bogey at the tenth hole, but rebounded with birdies at No.'s 11, 13, 14 and 17 to get to -1 for the day. He bogeyed the challenging par-four 18th but still started his senior campaign strong in a quality field of 87 players.
Dylan Patscot, who did not play in an event last spring, translated solid qualifying rounds into a quality T-26th showing in the season's first tournament. Patscot had four final round birdies, including three on a back nine which he played at level par. He racked up a 54-hole score of +7 220.
Elliot Gothe (T-66th) and freshmen Alex Scott (74th) and Ky Matsumoto rounded out coach Jason Payne's lineup in his first event leading the Bucs. Gothe's four-over 75 was the best effort of that group on Tuesday. He started his day with birdies at No.'s 1 and 2 en route to a one-under par front nine.
CSU is next in action Oct. 21-22 at the Camden Collegiate, hosted by the University of South Carolina.
