KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Charleston Southern junior Brandon Smith posted a second round one-under par 71 to surge into a tie for 13th place Monday at the East Bay Deli Classic at Turtle Point Golf Club. CSU matched its opening round score and sits T-13th entering Tuesday's final round.
College of Charleston leads the 21-team field at +1 overall. USC Upstate trails by one stroke and Memphis, Troy and Augusta are all within eight shots. The Spartans were in red numbers and had the lead for much of the day before dropping several shots on the way in. Memphis's Isaiah Jackson and CofC's Logan Sowell share the individual lead at -5. Sowell cared a two-under 70 to bump four spots up the leaderboard.
Smith recorded four birdies on the front nine to get to +1 overall and lead the Bucs. A stretch of three consecutive birdies from No's 5-7 helped the Odessa College transfer break into the top-15 of the 117-player field.
Fellow junior Elliot Gothe (T-19th) is also in the top-20 heading into Tuesday's third round. Gothe went out in four-under 32 and dropped in another birdie at the par-five tenth hole before giving back four strokes over his last seven holes to shoot 71.
Parker Jones (T-66th) contributed the Bucs' other top score of the rainy day with a four-over 76. Jones played mostly steady golf and was level par outside of a quadruple bogey at No. 8.
CSU is tied with Winthrop and trails Presbyterian by just two shots. The Bucs are seven back of a three-way tie for eighth.
Tuesday's final round will employ a shotgun start, beginning at 9 a.m. CSU will compete alongside Winthrop, Gardner-Webb and High Point.
