MGOLF Preview: Charleston Southern heads to Ninety Six for the 2019 Big South Championships

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern men's golf joins the rest of the Big South Conference this weekend for the 2019 Big South Conference Championships hosted at The Patriot at Grand Harbor in Ninety Six, S.C.

The Bucs are one of 10 teams competing over the four-day event that features an added twist including match play to the event. The first three days will consist of a full three-round, 54-hole tournament, while Saturday's final day will pit the top four teams in a pair of match play rounds to determine the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA postseason.

The 2019 Big South Men's Golf Championship is scheduled for Wednesday-Saturday, April 17-20 at the Patriot Golf Club in Ninety Six, S.C., with Longwood University serving as the official host.  Admission is free. The schools will play 54 holes as part of stroke play, with the top four teams advancing to Match Play to determine the Big South's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.

CSU men's golf is back in action this week for the 2019 Big South Championships as the entire season has built toward this event. The Bucs are putting together an experienced lineup in the field with all five players recording at least 15 rounds of play in tournament format this season.

Junior Brandon Smith sits atop the lineup and is among the Big South leaders this year with a 72.65 stroke average, carding a pair of 67s to highlight his season. His top individual finish came at The Hummingbird Intercollegiate where he tied for second in the field.

Sophomore Connor Moore has also stood out among the CSU lineup this season averaging 73.69 strokes per round and added a top-10 finish at the Wexford Intercollegiate. Elliot Gothe (74.08), Alan Smith (74.35), and Parker Jones (75.64) provide one of the most balanced lineups in the Big South this season.

CSU has won three Big South Championships in program history taking top honors in 2001, 2003, and 2015. Four Bucs have also claimed top individual honors in the conference's premier postseason event with Paul Reed (2003), Shawn Hall (2006), R.J. Keur (2015), and Austin James (2016) all taking medalist honors.
