WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshman long jumper Niegel Simmons took the individual title on Saturday to pace the Buccaneers on the first day of the Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships. The Bucs currently sit fourth overall in the team standings with 31.5 points following the events of the first day.
Niegel Simmons led three Bucs who advanced to the finals of the long jump, and then outdistanced the field on his final jump to take the individual championship in the event on Saturday. Simmons recorded a final jump of 7.28m to out-pace the field on his way to the individual title.
Campbell leads the team standings with 42 points overall, while Liberty is in second with 41.5. High Point stands third with 36 points, while CSU (31.5), Gardner-Webb (25), Winthrop (14) and UNC Asheville (4) close out the rankings.
Joshua Paramore finished fifth in the preliminaries of the 60m dash on Saturday. The sophomore sprinter placed third overall in the first heat of the day with a time of 6.97 to advance to Sunday's finals.
Freshman Justin Green led the Bucs in the 200m dash with a sixth place result in the preliminary round crossing the line in 22.63. Paramore also advanced to Sunday's finals in the event with a seventh place finish to qualify for Sunday's finals with a time of 22.64.
Green and senior Sheldon Townsend both ran in the preliminaries of the 400m dash but failed to advance to the finals. Green placed 10th overall with a time of 51.75, while Townsend placed 13th with a time of 52.26.
Vincent Johnson won his preliminary heat in the 60m hurdles to advance to Sunday's finals. The freshman hurdler crossed the line second overall with a time of 8.24 in the event. Sophomore Dadrekas Hill finished 10th overall with a time of 9.00.
Freshman Frankie Thomas finished fifth overall with a long jump of 6.87m, while Timothy Davis tied for eighth overall with a distance of 6.72m.
JP Caglione led three Buccaneers who advanced to the finals of the men's shot put and finished on the podium on Saturday. Caglione recorded his longest distance of the day with his second throw of 15.42m to take third in the event. Fellow freshman Ryan Spiecha finished fourth overall with a long distance of 14.96m, while senior Jacob Moore placed sixth with a throw of 14.33m. Freshman Clarence Moss placed 10th in the group with a throw of 13.66m.
The Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships resume at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Sunday, Feb. 26 at noon starting with heptathlon 60m hurdles.
