Charleston Southern continues the 2019 indoor season this weekend at the Gamecock Inaugural after a strong opening start at the Clemson Orange & Purple Open. The Buccaneers claimed four individual titles at the meet and placed 12 in the top three over seven different events.
Ryan Spiecha (shot put), Andrew Akright (mile), Vincent Johnson (60m hurdles) and Matt Inman (3000m) all claimed individual titles in their first action of 2019. Johnson's time of 8.00 in the 60m hurdles was a school record and eclipsed the field by three-tenths of a second.
JP Caglione was also among the leaders in the event after placing second overall in both the weight throw and the shot put to continue to provide a boon to the CSU throwers squad. Seth Wolfe was also on the podium for the Bucs after a third-place result in the men's weight throw.
The distance team will also look to continue to shine this weekend after claiming the titles in both the men's mile and the men's 3000m race. Jaymee Domoney and Trevor Dominy have continued to make strides for the Bucs and pushed Andrew Akright and Matt Inman to the individual titles at Clemson.
The Bucs will also look to Timothy Davis, Frankie Thomas, and Niegel Simmons to continue to enhance CSU's jumpers. Davis was the lone of the trio to compete this past weekend and finished second in the field in triple jump after clearing 14.83m.
Justin Green will also look to build off a strong opening statement at the Clemson Orange & Purple. The junior finished third overall in the 300m dash and advanced to the finals in the men's 60m dash.
The Carolina Indoor Track & Field Complex is located at 1304 Heyward Street in the old USC Field House. The facility features a banked six-lane 200m Mondo track, a separate throws area, two pole vault areas, two jumps runways and two high jump areas along with an eight-lane 60m straight track on the infield.
CSU continues the 2019 season at the VMI Team Challenge on Saturday, January 26.
