Spiecha, Wilson finish on podium on first day of Big South Indoor Championships

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Charleston Southern is third overall following the first day of the 2019 Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted at the Liberty Indoor Track & Field Complex.

CSU (34) sits behind Campbell (59) and High Point (46) after the first day's events. Hampton (23) and Winthrop (12) round out the top five in the conference standings.

Ryan Spiecha (shot put) and Jeryck Wilson (5000m race) both finished among the top three in their specific events as the duo received All-Conference recognition after being recognized on the podium.


Advancing to Finals

Joshua Paramore opened up his final Big South Indoor Championships by advancing in his signature event on Friday afternoon, the 60m dash. The senior crossed the line in 6.97 to be seeded fifth overall in the event heading into Saturday's final.

Justin Green, Vincent Johnson, and Paramore all advanced to Saturday's 200m dash finals following strong performances in the preliminary rounds. Green was fifth overall in 22.14, while Johnson crossed in 22.21 to place ninth. Paramore claimed one of the final two spots to place 11th in the field.

Josiah Scarlett and Green both claimed spots in Saturday's 400m dash finals. Scarlett was seventh in the field with a time of 50.13, while Green placed eighth in 50.14. Phillip Finsterwalder was 16th in the field with a time of 51.50.

Andrew Akright claimed one of the four automatic qualifying spots, while Jaymee Domoney also advanced in the men's 800m run. Akright was fourth overall with a time of 1:55.61, while Domoney was fifth in 1:55.42

Timothy Davis and Frankie Thomas placed in the top six in the men's long jump event. Davis placed fifth overall in the field with a distance of 7.13m, while Thomas was sixth at 7.12m.

Ryan Spiecha continues a strong CSU career as the junior thrower finished second overall in the men's shot put event on Friday. Spiecha's throw of 15.94m placed him second overall in the field.

JP Caglione finished just off the podium in fourth with a distance of 15.36m, while Seth Wolfe was sixth overall with a throw of 14.65m. Jerome Rice placed 11th after reaching 13.24m.

Jeryck Wilson paced with the leaders throughout the men's 5000m race on his way to finishing third overall in the field. Wilson carried the lead through most of the race, but came up just short on his way to crossing the line in 14:49.08.

Trevor Dominy was sixth overall in the field with a time of 15:17.39, while Matt Inman was 10th with a time of 15:44.15. Joshua Martin rounded out the group in 16th with a time of 17:14.08.

The Buccaneers placed seventh in the men's distance medley with the team of Keith Terry, Terik Johnson, Josiah Scarlett, and David Bergamasco finishing in 10:44.11.

Day two of the Big South Indoor Championships starts tomorrow at the Liberty Indoor Track & Field Complex. Field events start at 1 p.m., while the track events are set to start at 2:10 p.m.
