CHARLESTON, S.C. - Freshman Jeryk Wilson and the Charleston Southern men's cross country team make the trip to Asheville Christian Academy on Friday morning for the 2016 Big South Conference Cross Country championships. The Bucs will take on the field with the start time for the 8k race set for 11:30 a.m.
The Bucs were selected 10th overall in the Big South preseason poll, but have found success during the 2016 season with two top-five finishes on the year. The Bucs finished second overall at the S.C. State Duels and fourth overall at the Carolina Challenge in the hosted by South Carolina.
Campbell claimed the top spot in the 2016 Big South preseason poll with the Camels receiving nine first place votes and 99 points overall. Liberty received the final first-place vote and finished second in the poll with 90 points. High Point, UNC Asheville, and Radford rounded out the top five in the preseason poll.
Wilson has been the Bucs' top performer in the 2016 season with the Athens, Ga. native winning the S.C. State Duels with his fastest time of the season. Wilson crossed the finish line of the 8k at Matthews Industrial Park in 26:06.7 to pace the field. He added top 10 finishes at the Carolina Classic (6th) and Will Wilson Invitational (3rd) to lead the Bucs in the 2016 season.
Fellow freshman Trevor Dominy did not compete at the Carolina Classic, but he turned in the second-best times for the Bucs in each of the final three races. Dominy recorded a career-best 26:11.2 to place second at the S.C. State Duels and added a 12th place finish at the Will Wilson Invitational.
Keith Terry, Caleb Edgehill, Matthew Davis, Brandon Damon, and Chris Fludd-Clark have all placed among the top-five for the Bucs in the 2016 season. Terry and Edgehill have competed in all four races for the Bucs.
