CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) - Charleston Southern was picked second in the Big South Conference's men's cross country preseason poll as announced by the conference office on Thursday afternoon. The Bucs received their highest ranking in the poll in nearly 16 years after coming off one of their strongest seasons under Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Jim Stintzi.
The Bucs received 103 points in the preseason poll as picked by the league's head coaches. Three-time defending champion Campbell University received all 11 first place votes and 121 votes overall in being named the preseason favorite. High Point (95), UNC Asheville (86), and Radford (70) round out the preseason top five.
CSU returns All-Conference performer Jeryck Wilson, as well as a deep roster that includes top-25 finishers Jaymee Domoney and Joshua Bowers to the mix after the Bucs placed third in last year's conference championships. It was the Bucs' highest finish since the 1994 season with CSU placing two in the top-10 individually in the race.
Hampton and Winthrop tied for sixth in the preseason poll with 60 points. New member USC Upstate garnered eighth place with 53 points, followed by Gardner-Webb (ninth, 35 points), Presbyterian College (10th, 26 points) and Longwood (11th, 17 points).
The men's cross country season begins Friday, Aug. 31. The 2018 Big South Men's Cross Country Championship is slated for Friday, Oct. 26, in Kernersville, N.C., and will be hosted by High Point University.
